This hike starts with a steep descent to the Western States Trail along the American River. This part of the trail takes you past the new wooden bridge built at the Black Hole of Calcutta Waterfall. You will be walking past many historic ruins of the old quarry railroad bridges.

At the long-standing Mountain Quarries Bridge spanning the American River (locally known as No Hands Bridge) you head left & upward to hike the frontage trail along Old Foresthill Rd until reaching the Ranger Kiosk (and bathrooms) at Gate 137.

From there, head uphill on Stagecoach Trail where you'll definitely get your cardio going as you quickly gain elevation to overlook the river below.

The unmarked Manzanita Trail is hard to spot so keep your eyes on the look-out at approx mile 3.25. This is my favorite part of the hike as the trail travels thru "tunnels" of Manzanita on the way back to the starting point.
