The launch is from the west end of the East River Rest Area, just before the guardrail, under the US-41 bridge (see map and videos and photos), and east along the canal. After about 1.75 miles, turn left and head north through the two lakes. This is the first time we made this trip that we didn't see a few alligators along the canal and in the lakes. The scenery in the two waterways to the north is some of the prettiest we see on any of our paddles.

We have a local noxious, invasive exotic plant called Brazilian Pepper. It's invasive because it outcompetes the native vegetation. We saw a lot of it all over on this paddle, and it seems to be taking over the uplands, which is sad. You'll see a lot of it in the photos and videos. It's growing in among the natives, which makes it even harder to remove. We have a lot of "preserves" in Collier County, but unless they're adequately maintained, all we're preserving is acreage, not ecosystems.

If you zoom in on the aerial and look at the northwest terminus of our paddle, you'll see a roof visible on the aerial. There's a structure out there that we've visited before. We made it within 60 ft this time but didn't feel like cutting peppers.
